🎵 Member Spotlight: Jim Foiles — Tenor
This month, we’re shining the spotlight on Jim, a tenor who’s been singing with the QC Chordbusters for five years — but his barbershop journey began much earlier. Jim has been part of the barbershop world for over 56 years, starting out with the Bend of the River Chorus in Rock Island.
His introduction to barbershop came when a few members invited him to a rehearsal — and after one visit, he was hooked. The Rock Island chapter actually sponsored the QC Chordbusters, making the connection even more meaningful.
Jim’s favorite chorus number is “Battle Hymn of the Republic,” a challenging and powerful piece. A close second is the "Armed Forces Medley", which holds special meaning for him as a U.S. Navy veteran. He recalls fondly the days of traveling to contests across the state — memorable experiences filled with camaraderie and harmony.
Over the years, Jim has sung tenor in 12 different quartets, including Dad and the Boys, a group made up of Rock Island and Chordbusters members. He laughs remembering when they used to rehearse on a farm where a pig — literally — got a chiropractic adjustment from one of the quartet members studying at Palmer!
Outside of chorus, Jim enjoys fishing, golfing, and traveling. He describes himself as a bit of a jokester and credits Howard Stein for inspiring him to start singing barbershop in the first place.
When asked what he enjoys most about being a Chordbuster, Jim says it’s watching audience reactions as they perform. “It’s thrilling and rewarding to see people’s expressions change as we sing,” he says.
And for a few fun facts: Jim’s a coffee drinker two days a week (tea the others), loves ’50s music, and is most likely to be caught joking around during warm-ups.
We’re lucky to have Jim’s harmony, humor, and heart as part of our chorus family. 🎶
